Wee Jasper awaits
The small and vibrant village of Wee Jasper, NSW is ready and waiting to welcome you to our community. Wee Jasper is just one hour from Canberra or Tumut and 45 minutes from Yass. The main community is located in a beautiful valley following the course of the Goodradigbee River. Wee Jasper is located in the Yass Valley Shire.
This is a place where you can get back to nature, get your hands dirty and become self-sufficient, escape the rat race, gather your thoughts, build your dream home or achieve that rural ideal you've always wanted.
What ever that non-urban dream is that you have, Wee Jasper could be the place for you.
We are extremely keen for young families to move to our valley, to help bolster our primary school enrolments and because we know that our school has so much to offer. There's nothing quite like a small, country school education. The resources offered to the kids at Wee Jasper Public School are extraordinary - they "work hard, play hard" and excel in all they do, academically, socially and physically. There are also two excellent high schools just 45 minutes away in Yass and a bus is available for the majority of the trip.
Wee Jasper Public School always welcomes visitors - please contact the school if you'd like to drop in and see what it's all about.
They say it takes a village to raise a child and never has this been more true than in Wee Jasper, where the community spirit extends beyond the annual cricket match, bingo (we call it "Yee-Ha") night or tennis and golf challenges. The Memorial Hall, Community Tennis Courts, the Recreation Ground Bush Golf Course and Billy Grace Reserve are popular venues for community events.
Agriculture and Tourism are the main industries of the Wee Jasper valley. Wee Jasper is best known as being the home of fine wool, prime beef, Carey's Cave, fossils, bush camping reserves and also the Hume & Hovell Walking Track.
Local folks are busy running their own properties (beef, sheep, wool, mohair, wine) or operating the tavern and restaurant, the general store, various accommodation businesses and visitor attractions - which help to maintain the tourism trade and provide employment - others residents are employed locally in industries like mining and forestery. Some run businesses from home, work in Yass, Canberra or even Tumut and a lucky few telecommute - swapping the drive to town for a government subsidised satellite internet connection through the Australian Broadband Guarantee.
You might be surprised who you meet in Wee Jasper. The local attractions, physical beauty and feeling of "convenient remoteness" of the valley have always attracted creative and interesting people.
